Negotiations with China on German pork embargo remain difficult, says minister

Negotiations with China to lift the ban on pork imports from Germany following the discovery of African swine fever (PSA) in the country remain difficult, said German Agriculture Minister Uwe Feiler on the 10th.
China and a number of other pork buyers banned German pork imports in September 2020, following the first PSA case in Germany.
Germany is urging China to accept the “regionalization concept”, which bars pork imports only from the region of a country where swine fever has been detected, rather than a total ban on sales from the entire country.
Negotiations with China continue at the expert level, Feiler told a news conference.
“These negotiations are proving difficult,” said Feiler.
Other states seeking regionalization agreements with China have also not yet been successful, he added.
Germany has succeeded in containing African swine fever in a small eastern region, Feiler added.
