LNG-powered VLCC begins sea testing

COSCO has started the sea-proofing of the world’s first LNG-powered VLCC, in Chinese waters.
The 318,000 DWT vessel was built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), is 332.6 meters long, 60 meters wide, and has a beam of 30.5 meters.
The main engine and auxiliary generators are equipped with low-pressure selective catalytic reduction (LPSCR) reactors, which should help the vessel meet the requirements of phase III of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and NOx Level III requirements for the emission of nitrogen oxide. The main engine is capable of using two different fuels.
The ship has a range of 12,000 nautical miles consuming LNG and can go up to 24,000 nautical miles when operating in combined fuel mode.
The ship will be able to make a round trip between the Middle East and the United States or Asia without the need to refuel. Furthermore, in LNG mode, it completely eliminates sulfur gas emissions and considerably reduces CO2 emissions.
