Problems in maritime transport affect meat exports from Mercosur

Interruptions in global shipping and large rivers hit by insufficient water flow (to allow ships to navigate) are threatening beef exports from Mercosur, including Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. At the same time, food commodity prices are rising around the world.

According to Korni Pauls, vice president of the Paraguayan meat chamber, meatpacker activities in landlocked Paraguay are expected to decrease by around 20% to 25% due to the lack of containers, the increase in freight, and the uncertainty regarding delivery dates for the transport,

“This situation should continue until at least the end of September or October”, admits Pauls, adding that the reduced activity of meatpackers will be reflected in the country’s export volumes”.

The Paraguayan businessman comments on a statement from the Uruguayan meatpackers warning that production may have to be limited next month because frozen meat had to be taken to the slaughterhouse, as container ships are avoiding Montevideo in search of more profitable ports and cargo.

Some Uruguayan meatpackers are shipping containers overland to ports in southern Brazil and even Valparaíso in Chile.

A shortage of containers and ports in the United States, Europe, and Asia with long lines of ships is causing shipping agencies to avoid ports on the South American Atlantic coast.
