According to a survey by the Statistics and Performance Evaluation Department of ANTAQ (the national waterway transport agency), the port sector of Rio Grande do Norte, with four authorized terminals, handled 4.824 million tons in 2020. The value represents a drop of 18.78% compared to the year 2019 when the general cargo handling reached 5.940 million tons. The data does not account for the cargo handled at the support port, which is the transfer of products, mainly salt, from the production area to the terminal, by barges. In 2020, this volume was 1.890 million tons, 10.55% less than that registered in 2019 (2.113 million tons).
ANTAQ’s survey measures the movement in the Port of Natal, Terminal Salineiro Areia Branca (“Porto Ilha”), the Guamaré Waterway Terminal, and the Salina Diamante Branco (Galinhos) sea-shipping terminal. According to the agency’s data, the Port of Natal drained 696,895 tons last year, a volume 4.8% lower than that recorded in the previous year, of 732,542 tons.
At Terminal Salineiro Areia Branca, managed by CODEN, the second port with the highest flow in the State, the movement fell 18.10%, according to ANTAQ. In 2020, Porto Ilha transported 1,761 million tons of salt in cabotage and long haul. In the previous year, the volume was over 2.366 million tons. At the Guamaré Waterway Terminal, managed by Petrobras, which holds the largest volume of port outlets in RN, ANTAQ registered the outflow of more than 2.357 million tons last year, about 12% less than the previous year with an outflow of 2.686 million tons.
At the private Salina Diamante Branco sea-shipping terminal, located in Galinhos, the movement of sea salt plunged 94.52% last year, reaching 9,672 tons. In 2019, the terminal had drained 176,800 tons of the product.
